Installation Tips
Estimating
Measure the maximum length and width of the room including
all passageways and doorways. Provide an extra 4 inches on
each side.
Preparation
Ensure you have the proper tools within reach:
- a sharp safety knife with spare blades
- a non permanent marker pen
- a tape measure
- a long straightedge
- acrylic adhesive or double-sided tape, if required
Reverse roll your vinyl floor to acclimatise to room
temperature for two hours at a temperature of 64°F to
enhance its flexibility and manageability.
Subfloor
To ensure a smooth and satisfactory result the subfloor
must be:
- clean and smooth
- free from dust and particles of grit
- permanently dry
If the surface is uneven, we advise you to create an even
surface by:
- Wooden floor: cover with pre-shrunk hardboard or plywood
fixed at 6 inches using ring shank nails.
- Concrete floor: use a levelling compound to fill cracks
and holes to obtain a smooth surface.
- Tiled floor: use a levelling compound to bring all joints
to the same height.
- Soft flooring: remove old vinyl, linoleum or cork flooring
as well as all traces of adhesive.
Fitting
Cut your vinyl flooring in an open space adding 4 additional
inches on all sides. Roll the vinyl flooring up with the
pattern on the inside. Before laying the vinyl flooring in
the room, select a wall to use as a starting point to ensure
the wall is parallel with the pattern. Put the vinyl flooring
in the room and unroll it. Gently sweep the vinyl flooring
towards the walls starting from the middle of the room to
remove any trapped air underneath. Cut the vinyl flooring
to size along the doors and thresholds. Press the vinyl flooring
firmly outwards and downwards at the corners. Trim the vinyl
flooring precisely to size. Keep the knife as straight as
possible during trimming.
To obtain an invisible seam, position the second length
on top of the first length so that it overlaps it by half
an inch. Before cutting it, carefully position the second
length in respect of the first as far as pattern and repeat
are concerned. Then cut through both, remove the strips and
you will see that your Leolan flooring fits perfectly.
Your vinyl flooring can be fitted without adhesive
if the room does not exceed 20 yd ². If necessary,
you can put double-sided tape alongside two adjacent walls,
at doorways and under seams. We advise you to apply an adhesive
to fit your vinyl flooring if the room exceeds 20 yd ² or
it is to be heavily used.
DO |
DON'T |
Always keep Flexitec on a core if it is more than six feet in length. |
Do not install Flexitec over a wet substrate, it will trap moisture. |
Inspect it thoroughly before installation . |
Do not use the loose lay installation method on floors spanning more than 25 square yards or when seems are necessary. |
Be sure the sub floor is clean, firm and level. |
Do not use the loose lay method if the floor will be recieving heavy or rolling traffic. |
Accomodate Flexitec according to the climate of installation six hours prior to install. The sub floor temperature should be at least 65 degrees F. |
Never permanatly attatch the floor at any point in loose lay installations. |
Use the correct type of installation for the location, size, and usage. |
Do not let Flexitec touch the walls at any point in loose or semi loose lay installations. Bubbles will occure because of this. |
In loose lay or semi loose lay installations, leave 1/8" space between walls and flooring edges. For areas of extreme climate change leave up to 1/4". |
Never overlap double face tape. |
Only use perimeter double face tape or pressure sensitive adhesive on two adjoining walls in a semi-loose lay installation. |
Never locate a seam perpendicular to a doorway or enterance. |
Place double face tape in the form of an X where heavy appliances will be located if a semi loose-lay installation. |
Never slide heavy objects or appliances across the face of the vinyl. If you need to, use professional moving guides or carry the objects. |
Use only the recommended seam sealers and adhesives. |
Never use standard multi purpose vinyl adhesives to install Flexitec. If the adhesive is too wet it will never dry and bubbles may occur. |
Run seams parallel to, not across, major traffic areas whenever possible. |
Do not use abrasive cleaners. Use only Flexitec recommended cleaners or mild detergents. |
Protect all seamed areas whenever possible. |
Never wax Flexitec. It is not necessary. Waxes and solvents may leave a film that will dull the surface. |
Use permanant silicone caulk next to bathtubs, showers, sliding doors, and in similar areas to prevent moisture from getting under the vinyl. |
|
Always roll the vinyl in four directions with a roller in full spread applications. The roller should not exceed 100 pounds. |
